In the final sequence, the narrator tries to stop Project Mayhem's last operation, fails, and confronts Tyler one last time on a high floor overlooking the city.
What actually happens
The narrator ends Tyler by turning the gun on himself. He puts the barrel in his own mouth and fires, angling the shot so the wound is survivable. The act, not the aim, is the point: by choosing to pull the trigger himself, the narrator proves he is the one in control, and Tyler, the projection, dies. The narrator survives with a wound through the cheek.
The buildings still fall. Project Mayhem has wired the headquarters of the major credit-card companies with explosives, intending to erase the records of consumer debt and reset everyone to zero.
