Reality is scored on the standard TVI rubric. Cognitive Stimulation (40%) asks whether the show resists the genre's default mechanics. Educational Value (35%) rewards specific documentation of a skill, culture, or process. Craft & Quality (25%) rewards editing that does not manufacture emotional beats the underlying material has not earned.
Anchor picks: The Last Dance sits at the upper end of the reality / sports-documentary register for its archival discipline and refusal to flatten the principals into simple shapes. Chef's Table treats craft profiles with cinematographic seriousness most lifestyle programming doesn't attempt. Hoop Dreams (IQ 175) is what observational reality looks like when it earns the years of access required to produce honest material.
What earns lower scores: dating shows, manufactured-conflict competitions, lifestyle voyeurism, programming structured around predictable beats, where the editing is the actual product. The rubric is not anti-reality; it is anti-engineered-consumption.
