Why it works as a first thrill movie

Spielberg builds the scares on suspense rather than gore. The camera cuts away from nearly everything graphic; the fear lives in water rippling in a cup and a door handle turning.
The children on screen are not props. Lex and Tim are hunted, and they survive by being capable: she is the one who gets the computers running, he climbs an electrified fence and lives. A child viewer is offered competence, not just peril.
The fear is attached to wonder. The same film that makes raptors terrifying makes a child cry the first time the brachiosaurus fills the frame. That pairing, awe and danger in the same creatures, is the film's developmental gift.
The structure breathes: every intense sequence is followed by recovery space, which is exactly what a younger viewer needs to process and re-engage.

The opening: a worker is dragged into a raptor cage, conveyed by chaos rather than imagery. Sets the stakes in the first three minutes.
