The TVI Take
Amy Heckerling's 1995 Emma adaptation set in Beverly Hills that turned out to be one of the most carefully-structured screenplays of its decade. Cher Horowitz is rare protagonist work, a character whose cluelessness is the actual subject, rendered with sympathy rather than as comic punching bag.
The fashion specificity, the Valley-vocabulary ("as if," "whatever"), and the Mr. Hall / Miss Geist matchmaking subplot are anthropological commitments most romcoms don't sustain.
