The TVI Take

Bong Joon-ho's 2006 Han River monster film whose structural commitment, that the family-drama register is the actual subject and the creature is the catalyst, established the formal pattern Bong would extend through Snowpiercer and Parasite. The film's political subtext (anti-American military criticism, government incompetence around the SARS-coded epidemic response) is rendered more pointedly than the genre framing suggests.
