The TVI Take
Ben Stiller's satire of mid-2000s blockbuster ego whose structural commitment, that Hollywood self-importance is the actual subject, is what allows the most controversial choices (Downey Jr.'s blackface as critique-of-method-acting, Cruise's Les Grossman as critique-of-studio-power) to land as the satire they intend rather than as the jokes they superficially appear. The opening-trailers sequence is sustained genre parody at unusually committed register.
