The short version: Forgotten Island is rated PG by the MPA for animated sequences of scary action, language, rude humor, thematic elements, some violence and brief tobacco imagery. We have not scored it yet, and we do not guess at numbers, so this page is what a careful reviewer can tell you today. PG is a lighter rating than this list suggests on first read, and the story's central stake, two best friends who could forget each other, is the part younger children may carry home.
What the PG rating actually says
- The MPA's rationale names six things: animated sequences of scary action, language, rude humor, thematic elements, some violence, and brief tobacco imagery. Each is named, none is called strong, and the scary action is specified as animated.
- PG means parental guidance suggested. Some material may not suit younger children, and the rating leaves the call with you. It is a step below PG-13, the rating LAIKA's Wildwood carries this month.
What the story is about
- In DreamWorks' synopsis, Jo and Raissa, best friends who have just graduated from high school, stumble through a portal on their last night together into the island of Nakali. The price of going home is their memories of their whole friendship, so they have to find another way out before they forget each other.
- That premise is the emotional center, and it is worth knowing before a young child sees it. The fear on offer is not only monsters and chases. It is losing a friend, and losing the memory of having had one.
- The film is written and directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, who also made Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. H.E.R. voices Jo and Liza Soberano voices Raissa, with Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Lea Salonga, Dolly de Leon and Jo Koy in the cast.
What we can say now, and what we cannot yet
- What we can say: the official rating and what it names, the story's premise, and who made it.
- What we cannot say yet: how intense the scary sequences are on screen, an age-fit band, or a TVI Score. Those come from watching and judging the film, and we will not assert what we have not seen.
- The film reaches digital release on October 27, and this page upgrades in place when our scored review is ready.
Ask before you decide
Three questions do most of the work before you decide.
- How did Puss in Boots: The Last Wish sit with your child? It comes from the same filmmakers and is the closest reference point.
- How does your child feel about stories where a friendship is at risk? The premise turns on two friends forgetting each other, and for some children that lands harder than any monster.
- Is this a theater trip or a night at home? At home you can pause, talk, or stop, which changes how much scary action a younger child can manage.
