The short version: the new animated Cat in the Hat is rated PG by the MPA for action, some peril, mild language and rude humor. It opens November 6, 2026. We have not seen or scored it yet, and we do not guess at numbers, so this page is what a careful reviewer can tell you today. For the youngest Seuss fans the useful thing to know is that this is a new story built around the Cat, not a retelling of the book.
What the PG rating actually says
- The MPA's rationale is action, some peril, mild language and rude humor. That is a short list, and the words some and mild are the board's own.
- PG means parental guidance suggested: some material may not suit younger children, and the decision is yours. A PG for action and peril usually describes chases and danger rather than anything frightening in the way a horror rating would.
This is a new story, not the book
- Dr. Seuss's 1957 book is a single rainy afternoon with two children, a fish, and the Cat. Warner Bros.' synopsis describes something different: the Cat, on his toughest mission yet, has to cheer up siblings Gabby and Sebastian as they adjust to life in a new town, and risks losing his magical hat if he fails.
- A child who knows the book may expect the book. It is worth saying beforehand that this is the Cat in a new adventure, with a move to a new town at its center, which some children will find more relevant than the original and some will find less familiar.
- The film is written and directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja. Bill Hader voices the Cat, with Xochitl Gomez and Tiago Martinez as Gabby and Sebastian and Matt Berry as the fish.
What we can say now, and what we cannot yet
- What we can say: the official rating and what it names, the story the studio describes, and who made it.
- What we cannot say yet: how intense the action and peril are on screen, an age-fit band, or a TVI Score. Those come from watching and judging the film, and we will not assert what we have not seen.
- This page upgrades in place when our scored review is ready.
Ask before you decide
Three questions do most of the work before you decide.
- Is this your child's first movie in a theater? Volume, darkness and length are often the real test for preschoolers, more than anything in the rating.
- Has your family moved, or is a move coming? The story is built around two children adjusting to a new town, which can be a good opening for a conversation or a lot to sit with.
- Does your child know the book? If so, tell them ahead of time that this is a new adventure with the same Cat.
