Short answer: yes, The Lion King is appropriate for most children ages 5 and up, and it is one of the best films in our entire kids canon. The one thing to know is Mufasa's death, which happens on screen. That scene is not a reason to skip the film. It is the reason to watch it together. Here is the methodology behind that.

Watch it together

This is an Essential, not a film to swap away from. The one recommendation that matters is to watch it together. A few prompts to use after, in Cordelia's voice:
  1. Mufasa tells Simba he is only brave when he has to be. Ask your child about a time they had to be brave, and how that felt different from a time they only wanted to feel brave.
  2. After the film, you can say plainly that Mufasa died, that Simba believed it was his fault, and that it was not. Naming it out loud helps a child who maps the guilt onto themselves.

Common questions

Is The Lion King too scary for kids?
It can be intense, mainly in Mufasa's death and the hyena scenes, but it is not gratuitous. Most children 5 and up handle it well when an adult is present to help name what happened.
What age is appropriate for The Lion King?
We place it at ages 5 and up. The G rating undersells the emotional weight, so the right age is less about the number and more about whether a parent can watch along.
Does Mufasa's death upset children?
Often, yes, and that is a normal, healthy response. The sadness is the point of the scene, and it is most valuable when a parent is there for it.
Is the 2019 remake the same as the original for kids?
The emotional beats are the same, including the death. Our review and score are for the 1994 original.
Why is The Lion King considered a classic?
It gives children an emotional grammar, durable images for grief, courage, and identity, carried by a score that stores the memory for decades.
What is The Lion King's age rating?
Officially, The Lion King is rated G under the MPA film rating system, the official G, PG, PG-13 scale. TVI does not issue ratings. Our age-fit guidance, which is a different thing, places it at ages 5 to 12. The official rating is an industry classification; our guidance is a developmental read of who the title actually serves.
