What the film does well

It teaches an emotional grammar. The film hands a child images for feelings they can feel before they can explain them: the terror of losing a parent, the burden of being chosen, the shame of staying away too long.
It separates real bravery from performed bravery. Mufasa's line, that being brave does not mean you go looking for trouble, is the mature view, and the film stages Simba's reckless “I laugh in the face of danger” as the recklessness that nearly gets him killed.
It models recovery accurately. Rafiki does not erase the past, he changes Simba's relationship to it: you can run from it, or learn from it.
The score and songs carry the emotional architecture, which is why the film stays with children for decades.

What to know before you watch

Mufasa's death is on screen and emotionally intense. For many children it is one of the first deaths they witness in a story. We name that plainly.
Scar is a genuinely menacing villain, and the hyena sequences are dark. The kingdom under Scar grays out and is meant to feel frightening.
The film moves a sensitive child through real grief, guilt, and abandonment before the resolution. That is the film working as intended, not a flaw, but a parent should know the emotional terrain before pressing play.
None of this disqualifies the film. It is the reason co-viewing matters.

Mufasa tells Simba he is only brave when he has to be. Ask your child about a time they had to be brave, and how that felt different from a time they only wanted to feel brave.
After the film, you can say plainly that Mufasa died, that Simba believed it was his fault, and that it was not. Naming it out loud helps a child who maps the guilt onto themselves.
