The short version: at the end of Dune: Part Two, Paul Atreides has killed the Baron and Feyd-Rautha, forced the Emperor to surrender, and claimed Princess Irulan's hand to take the throne. When the Great Houses refuse to accept him, he sends the Fremen to war, the holy war he had foreseen and tried to avoid. Chani refuses to bow and leaves alone. Dune: Part Three, which adapts Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah, picks up about seventeen years later.
Part Two begins with Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica, living among the Fremen after the fall of House Atreides. Paul fights in the Fremen raids on Harkonnen spice harvesters, rides his first sandworm, and takes the Fremen names Usul and Muad'Dib. He and Chani fall in love. She trusts him as a man and distrusts the prophecy that calls him the Lisan al-Gaib, the outsider who will lead the Fremen to paradise.

Jessica drinks the Water of Life and survives to become the Fremen's Reverend Mother while pregnant with Paul's sister, Alia. She works to spread the prophecy among the Fremen of the south, where belief in a messiah runs strongest. Stilgar, the Fremen leader, believes in Paul from the start.

The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen replaces his brutal nephew Rabban with his younger nephew, Feyd-Rautha, to crush the Fremen. Emperor Shaddam IV, who helped the Harkonnens destroy House Atreides, watches with his daughter, Princess Irulan, while the Bene Gesserit, through the Reverend Mother Mohiam and Lady Margot Fenring, secure Feyd-Rautha's bloodline for their own breeding plans.

After the Harkonnens attack the Fremen in the north, Paul goes south and drinks the Water of Life. He survives a poison that kills most men, wakes with full sight of past and future, and learns that Jessica is the Baron's daughter, which makes Paul a Harkonnen by blood. He accepts the role of messiah he had refused, and the southern Fremen follow him. His old weapons master, Gurney Halleck, returns and leads him to House Atreides' hidden atomics.

He accepts the role of messiah he had refused, and the southern Fremen follow him.
When the Emperor arrives on Arrakis, Paul threatens to destroy the spice and the Fremen attack in force. Paul kills the Baron. He then fights Feyd-Rautha in a duel to the death and wins. The Emperor yields, and Paul demands Irulan's hand in marriage to claim the throne. The Great Houses in orbit reject his rule, and Paul orders the Fremen to lead them to paradise: the holy war across the universe that his visions had shown him. Chani, who never believed the prophecy and will not kneel, walks out alone and calls a sandworm to take her into the desert.

Dune: Part Three adapts Dune Messiah. TheWrap reports that it is set about seventeen years after Part Two, and the studio's synopsis, as carried by theater listings, finds Paul nearly two decades into his rule as Emperor. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Javier Bardem return, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia and Robert Pattinson joining the cast. It opens in the United States on December 18, 2026.
