The TVI Take

Ted Post's 1970 sequel recycles the original's premise on a visibly smaller budget, sidelines Heston, and pads its middle before finding a genuinely nihilistic idea: an underground mutant cult worshipping a cobalt doomsday bomb. The Cold War allegory lands and Taylor's apocalyptic finale still shocks, but blunter satire and thinner craft mark it as the weakest of the saga.
