For younger viewers, with a grown-up: Pick one. Do not turn the show into homework.
Aang finds out he is the last airbender. What do Katara and Sokka do that helps him not be alone with that feeling? Zuko wants his father to be proud of him. What would a kind adult want Zuko to know? Toph's parents try to protect her, but they also hold her back. How can grown-ups help a child stay safe without making them feel small? Sokka cannot bend. What does he practice that still makes him important to the group? For parents watching with children, especially ages 8 to 12: Pick one. Do not turn the show into homework.
Aang is afraid of the Avatar State because he can hurt people when he loses control. What helps a child learn to handle strong feelings without being ashamed of having them? Katara is angry about what happened to her mother. What is the difference between feeling anger and letting anger choose what kind of person you become? Iroh stays close to Zuko even when Zuko is not ready to change. What does steady love look like when a child is angry, ashamed, or not yet ready to hear the truth? The four nations all have their own way of fighting and seeing the world. Is one way enough, or does each one know something the others need? For viewers of any age: Pick one. Do not turn the show into homework.
The Guru tells Aang he must release attachment to the people he loves. Aang refuses. What does the show seem to be saying about the relationship between love and growth? Zuko spends most of the show carrying shame he did not earn. What helps him stop carrying it? Who, in your own life, does for you what Iroh did for him? Sokka has no bending. He invents. He plans. He learns the sword. What does the show seem to be saying about what people can do without supernatural gifts? Aang refuses to kill Ozai, even when almost everyone tells him there is no other way. When is restraint a form of strength rather than avoidance? Read the published discussion

For viewers of any age (alone, with a partner, or with a child) The film rewards conversation. These are not comprehension questions. They are conversation starters. Pick one or two. Do not turn the movie into homework.
Mufasa tells Simba he is only brave when he has to be. Tell me about a time you had to be brave. What made it different from a time you only wanted to feel brave? Rafiki tells Simba he can either run from his past or learn from it. Is there a part of your own past you have been running from? What would learning from it look like instead? Remember who you are. Who might say this line to you, and why would their saying it matter? For parents watching with children, especially ages 5 to 8, with the questions aimed toward the upper end of that range The film rewards conversation. These are not comprehension questions. They are conversation starters. Pick one or two. Do not turn the movie into homework.
What do you think Simba felt after his dad died? Why do you think Simba blamed himself? Was it really his fault? Hakuna Matata sounds like a fun way to live. When did it help Simba, and when did it stop helping him? When Rafiki shows Simba his reflection in the pool, who does Simba see? Why does that matter? Mufasa and Scar are very different leaders. What makes them different? The film says we are all part of a great circle of life. What do you think that means? Children pick up far more than they can articulate. The prompts exist to give them a chance to show you what they noticed.
