Why you should trust this score
How we stay independent. Editorial scores are not for sale. TVI may take on paid advisory or research work, but no commercial relationship buys coverage, advance access to scores, favorable treatment, or a change to a published finding. We pay for our own streaming subscriptions, and no reviewer sees sponsor data or affiliate revenue tied to a score. More about how we work →
For parents
Watch this one together. The film is honest about how animals live and think: predators eat, parents leave, a gosling's family is killed in the first minutes, and the characters talk about death, survival, and what a life is for in plain terms. Those moments are true to life rather than gratuitous, and they are pointed enough that some families will want to decide by age whether a child is ready for them. The catalog band is 6 to 12. A grown-up nearby turns the hard scenes into conversation instead of fright.
Correction history
Reassessment, September 5, 2026: both founders watched the complete film and rescored it in a full receipted session on the kids branch, blind to the prior number. The score changed from 157/200 to 179/200, Stimulating to Masterclass, and the SEL score from 40 to 45. The component judgments behind the new number are on file.

Chris Sanders's adaptation of Peter Brown scores 179 because every character overrides a nature to act for someone else, and the film shows the cost. A robot learns to parent a runt gosling; the bedtime story Fink invents becomes the film's own memory architecture; the animation's mimicry of real animal behavior carries the argument without lecturing a nine-year-old.
