The practical call, from our own viewing: 11 and up for most children who already enjoy the Holland Spider-Man films. Ten can be reasonable when the child actively wants to see it, has comfortably handled No Way Home, and is not especially sensitive to possession, realistic gunfire, visible injury, or stories about being forgotten. Twelve is the safer starting point for children who are emotionally or sensorily cautious. The film is rated PG-13 and runs 145 minutes, and the action stays broadly within modern Marvel territory. What makes this entry feel more mature is not gore. It is the combination of possession, loss of bodily control, a hero who is shot and treated as possibly dying, a government experiment in which a young woman died, and sustained grief: Peter loves people who no longer remember him, and the film lets that loss stay painful instead of covering every difficult beat with a joke.

The decision rule

Ask before you decide

Three questions do most of the work, and none of them require you to have seen the film.
  1. Which Spider-Man films has your child already sat through, and how did they do? Not which ones do they know about. Which ones have they actually watched, start to finish, and what were they like afterward.
  2. Who else is coming? The decision is rarely about the child who asked. It is usually about a younger sibling being brought along, and that is the child the rating is written for.
  3. Is this about the movie, or about Friday? Opening weekend is a social event as much as a film. If the pull is being there with friends, a later showing of something else together may solve the same problem.

Can a child under 13 see a PG-13 film in a US cinema?
A child under 13 can be admitted to a PG-13 film in a US cinema. PG-13 is an advisory rather than a restriction: the MPA is telling you some material may be unsuitable under 13 and leaving the decision with you.
What is Spider-Man: Brand New Day's age rating?
Officially, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is rated PG-13 under the MPA film rating system, the official G, PG, PG-13 scale. TVI does not issue ratings. Our age-fit guidance for families, which is a different thing, is on this page above. The official rating is an industry classification; our guidance is a developmental read of who the title actually serves.
