What the PG-13 rating actually says
The MPA rated the film PG-13 for sequences of action/violence and some language. That is the entire published rationale, and it names two categories.
PG-13 is a caution, not a restriction. In a US cinema a child of any age can be admitted to a PG-13 film. The rating is the MPA telling you that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13, and then leaving the decision with you.
Read what the rationale does not say as carefully as what it does. It does not cite sexual content, drug use, or disturbing or frightening imagery. That is not proof those elements are absent, and we will not tell you they are. It does mean the raters did not find them significant enough to name, which is a weaker statement than a clean bill and a stronger one than nothing.

How the Spider-Man films have actually scored
Six Spider-Man films are already in our catalog, and the spread is wider than the shared costume suggests.
The two animated Spider-Verse films lead the franchise: Across the Spider-Verse at 155 and Into the Spider-Verse at 152, both Stimulating. They carry the most demanding storytelling in the series, and they are the two most parents tell us surprised them.
The live-action films sit lower and closer together: No Way Home and Spider-Man 2 at 128, Spider-Man (2002) and Homecoming at 113, all Competent.
That gap is the useful thing to know before Friday. On our rubric this franchise has been reliably well-made and rarely demanding, with the animated entries as the clear exception. A new live-action entry starts from that history, not from the animated one.
The question underneath the rating
For most families the real question is not whether a Spider-Man film is too much. It is whether a particular child is ready for sustained comic-book violence played at a scale that is meant to feel dangerous.
A child who has already sat through the previous live-action films is in familiar territory. A younger sibling being brought along because the older one is going is the case worth thinking about, and it is usually the actual decision being made.
If your child is on the younger end and the answer is not obvious, the animated films are genuinely the stronger watch by our measure, and they are not a consolation prize.
Ask before you decide
Three questions do most of the work, and none of them require you to have seen the film.
Which Spider-Man films has your child already sat through, and how did they do? Not which ones do they know about. Which ones have they actually watched, start to finish, and what were they like afterward.
Who else is coming? The decision is rarely about the child who asked. It is usually about a younger sibling being brought along, and that is the child the rating is written for.
Is this about the movie, or about Friday? Opening weekend is a social event as much as a film. If the pull is being there with friends, a later showing of something else together may solve the same problem.
