The TVI Take
Paul Haggis threads a dozen Los Angeles lives through 36 hours of collision, from Matt Dillon's racist cop pulling over Thandiwe Newton to a locksmith buying his daughter an invisible cloak against the violence outside. The ensemble is strong and the editing interlocks cleanly, both Oscar-winning, but the screenplay engineers its coincidences and states its lesson on prejudice too plainly to earn the reckoning it stages.
A Best Picture winner that tells rather than trusts.
