The TVI Take
Chris Columbus stages John Hughes's script as broad farce, but the craft holds it above novelty: Macaulay Culkin carries the loneliness beneath the slapstick, and John Williams's score turns the church-pew scene with old man Marley into a real reconciliation. The engineered third-act defenses reward some anticipation, though the film asks little sustained thought.
A durable holiday comedy, competent on the rubric.
