The first stop-motion feature produced in Mexico follows a young nineteenth-century writer who journeys into her own subconscious, where the characters she has imagined have taken on independent life. The puppet craft is extraordinary and the gothic design owes an open debt to del Toro, but the score reflects a second half that overcomplicates its mythology and a finale that resolves less than it promises.
