The TVI Take
Larry Gelbart's adaptation of the Robert Altman film into an 11-season series that consistently held comedy and tragedy in the same frame. The Korean War setting was always Vietnam-displaced commentary; the show's structural willingness to let episodes end on devastation (the Henry Blake finale, the chicken-on-the-bus monologue) is what separates it from the sitcoms it influenced.
Required viewing for understanding how 1970s American television processed war.
