The TVI Take
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin launched a franchise from an ancient-astronaut premise: an Egyptologist decodes a buried ring that opens onto a desert world where a being posing as the sun god Ra rules a human population with alien technology. James Spader's linguist and Kurt Russell's grieving colonel supply the two registers, curiosity and command.
The film is more spectacle than depth and its craft is uneven, but the central idea of mythology as misremembered contact was strong enough to carry a decade of television. David Arnold's score is the standout element.
