The TVI Take
Julian Fellowes's HBO period drama treats late-19th-century New York class transition, old-money Astor families versus new-money railroad fortunes, as actual sociological subject. The Black storyline through Peggy Scott does work most period dramas evade: Reconstruction-era Black middle class as material reality, not as background corrective.
The structural willingness to render the period's racial and class architecture is what earns the IQ above the genre baseline.
