The TVI Take
Peter Jackson stretches Tolkien's slim children's book into an overlong first chapter, padding the dwarves' quest to reclaim Erebor with invented connective material. The craft holds: Weta's Middle-earth, Howard Shore's returning motifs, and the Riddles in the Dark scene where Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman turn a game of wits into the trilogy's finest sequence.
Handsome and fun, but weightless beside the Rings films.
