The TVI Take
Linklater's 2019 adaptation of the Maria Semple epistolary novel. Cate Blanchett as a reclusive architect in Seattle whose disappearance prompts her teenage daughter's search.
Blanchett is fully committed, but the novel's letter-driven structure resists adaptation and the film never finds its register. The architectural backstory and the mid-life creative-block argument are stronger than the surrounding drama. Modest cognitive engagement; the source novel does the same material better.
