The TVI Canon is the credibility surface for the catalog. Every director here has been individually ratified, not algorithmically promoted. Top thirty entered the Canon by auto-ratification on May 21, 2026 (mean TVI Score above 162 across their scored corpus). Ranks 31 through 59 were ratified by hand against the canon-selection criteria locked at methodology v1.2: durability, breadth, cultural register, and rubric-tier consistency.

The Canon does not claim these are the only canonical filmmakers in cinema. It claims they are the filmmakers whose work the TVI methodology has scored, audited, and stood behind. Names not on the list are most often names the catalog has not yet scored to completion. Absence is data debt, not a verdict.

How Canon Ratification Works

Each director is scored across their full theatrical filmography. The candidate pool is generated by mean TVI Score. Ratification then requires a human-judgment pass against four criteria: durability of impact over time, breadth of corpus, multi-decade cultural register, and consistency of rubric-tier performance. A director with one Masterclass and ten Passive films does not enter the Canon on the strength of the one. A director with consistent Stimulating-and-above work across decades can earn the Canon even without peak Masterclass count. Methodology over hits.

The full criteria are public at /methodology/. Borderline cases are recorded in the ratification log alongside the rationale for defer or reject. The Canon is reviewed annually with the same dual sign-off.
