The TVI Take
Kentaro Miura's manga-anchored medieval-fantasy saga, the 1997 anime adaptation covered the Golden Age arc and ended on the Eclipse, the most-discussed structural climax in shonen-adjacent dark fantasy. Guts and Griffith are the dual protagonists, the friendship-to-betrayal arc the actual subject.
Miura's pages set the visual ceiling the various TV adaptations measure against. The work is unrelenting about violence and trauma; the philosophical content sits in Guts's question of whether a person who has lost everything is obligated to keep going.
