The TVI Take
Dean Parisot's affectionate parody hands washed-up actors from a cancelled space show a real starship, because aliens who intercepted the broadcasts mistook them for genuine heroes and their episodes for historical documents. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and a magnificently weary Alan Rickman play the gap between the roles they resent and the courage the situation demands.
What could have been a one-joke premise becomes a real adventure and a sincere argument about what fans take from the stories they love. It is regularly cited as one of the best Star Trek films, which was never even its franchise.
