The TVI Take
Andrew Stanton's live-action debut adapts Burroughs into a handsome dying-planet epic, and the Barsoom worldbuilding, from the Thern puppeteers to the flying-ship sieges, shows real ambition. Michael Giacchino's score and the production design elevate it, but the exposition-clogged script and Taylor Kitsch's flat lead keep the pulp from ever cohering into something demanding.
