The TVI Take
George Lucas returns to direct a technical showcase whose craft outpaces its script. The podrace and the Darth Maul duel, set to John Williams' choral "Duel of the Fates," are staging highlights, and Doug Chiang's production design is precise.
Yet the Trade Federation intrigue, midi-chlorian retcon, and Jar Jar reduce the myth to inert politics, and the child-Anakin performances flatten the drama. Ambitious spectacle, thin thought.
