The TVI Take
Robert Wise steers the first TOS feature toward contemplative 2001-era sci-fi rather than adventure: the V'Ger reveal, a machine intelligence seeking its creator, is a genuine idea, and Jerry Goldsmith's main theme became the franchise's signature. Trumbull and Dykstra's Oscar-nominated effects impress, but glacial pacing and thin characterization keep the ambition from fully landing.
