The TVI Take
J.J. Abrams reboots the franchise by using time travel to reset its own timeline, freeing the film from fifty years of continuity while keeping the characters intact.
Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto rebuild Kirk and Spock as a friendship still forming rather than a settled institution, and the casting is the film's real achievement. The result is propulsive, well-cast blockbuster science fiction that trades the series' cerebral tradition for momentum, elevated by Michael Giacchino's score and a production that made Star Trek feel current again.
