The TVI Take
James Cameron shot a first-contact story at the bottom of the ocean and built a production as punishing as the setting, filming in a flooded nuclear containment tank. The story runs on pressure in both senses, a diving crew's dwindling oxygen and a marriage collapsing under the same strain, until Ed Harris's descent to disarm a warhead becomes a wager on whether humanity is worth saving.
The water-tentacle effect won the visual-effects Oscar and previewed the digital decade Cameron would go on to define.
