The TVI Take
Luc Besson's maximalist space opera is a triumph of design before it is anything else, built from the imaginations of comic artists Jean Giraud and Jean-Claude Mezieres and dressed by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and a peroxide Gary Oldman move through a future New York of stacked flying traffic and an opera sung by a blue alien Diva whose aria is cross-cut with a firefight.
The story is thin by design, love as the titular element, but the world-building and the sheer confidence of the vision are close to unmatched in the genre.
