What Paramount has actually said
The official premise, in full: a young Earthbender discovers she is the new Avatar after Korra, but in this dangerous era that title marks her as humanity's destroyer rather than its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization's last strongholds collapse.
We are quoting it rather than summarizing it, because turning a studio logline into a content warning is how a parents guide starts inventing things. That is the whole of the official description, and it is more than most pre-release pages have.
The structure is 26 episodes across two books of 13 half-hours each. Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko created it and executive produce, with Ethan Spaulding also executive producing.
Why the creators are the most useful fact
DiMartino and Konietzko made the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is the highest-scoring animated series in our catalog at 181 out of 200, with a social-emotional score of 49 out of 50.
That series earned those numbers partly by trusting children with genocide, occupation, and grief, handled with care rather than avoided. Parents who watched it with their kids know it was never a soft show.
So the same hands are on this one. That is a genuine signal about craft. It is not a promise about age-appropriateness, and the premise suggests they are reaching somewhere darker.
What the rest of the franchise has scored
Avatar: The Last Airbender, the original series, 181. Masterclass, and one of very few children's shows at that level.
The Legend of Korra, the previous grown-up entry in this world, 129. Competent. It is the most instructive number here: Korra aged the audience up and, on our rubric, the educational value fell sharply while the craft held. A darker, older Avatar story is not automatically a richer one.
The 2024 live-action adaptation, 136. Stimulating, and much of that carried by the source material rather than the adaptation.
None of these predicts Seven Havens. They do show that this world has produced work across a hundred-point range, which is why we watch before we score.

If your child loved the original series and is asking about this one, the useful move is a rewatch rather than a wait. The original is the highest-scoring thing in our kids catalog and it rewards a second pass at an older age.

How did they handle the hard parts of the original? The war, Aang losing his people, Zuko's face. A child who sat with those is in different territory than one who watched for the bending.
